Skiing

Staying at our chalet with a car you can drive up to the local lifts at Auris (5 minutes), and the links to Alpe d’Huez, or make excursions to neighbouring resorts such as:

... the north facing slopes of Les Deux Alpes
http://www.les2alpes.com (20kms),
... the legendary off-piste runs at La Grave
http://www.la-grave.com (20kms)
... or the big league resort of Serre-Chevalier http://www.serrechevalier.com (60kms).

So if the snow is not perfect in one resort, then a short drive provides access to completely different conditions and scenery.

Alpe d’Huez http://www.alpedhuez.com
There are few ski areas to rival Alpe d’Huez / Massif des Grandes Rousses for extent and variety of terrain. Alpe d’Huez has extensive, high, sunny slopes. There are 235kms of pistes and 87 lifts in an efficient, modern system. The slopes range from 3,320m to 1,120m, with 55kms of snowmaking facilities.

Alpe d’Huez has been short listed by “Where to Ski & Snowboard” book for one of the top 10 resorts in the World for:
• Something for Everybody – Resorts with everything from reassuring nursery slopes to real challenges for experts.
• Off-Piste Wonders – Alpine resorts where, with the right guidance and equipment, you can have the time of your life.
• High-Mileage Piste-Bashing – Extensive intermediate slopes with big lift networks
• Resorts for Beginners – European resorts with gentle snow-sure nursery slopes and easy longer runs to progress to.
• Special Mountain Restaurants – Alpine resorts where the mountain restaurants can really add an extra dimension to your holiday

For beginners there are vast, gentle, sunny nursery slopes, with 37 green runs and 31 blues. For the intermediate and advanced skiers there are 32 reds and 17 blacks, including the Sarenne run, the longest black piste in the Alps. Cross-country skiing is also available.

Auris-en-Oisans
Auris en Oisans is a small friendly resort (1,600-2,200m) which links by chairlift into the vast ski area of Alpe d’Huez. It consists of wood-clad chalet style apartments, shops, bars and restaurants, and is pleasantly close to the thickest woodland in the area. It has a reputation as a fine family resort, with everything close to hand, including a nursery and a kindergarten. There is an ESF ski school in Auris http://www.aurisesf.com with some English-speaking ski instructors, offering lessons for adults and children of all ages, plus a children’s club for 18 months to 10 year olds.

Access to the slopes of Alpe d’Huez is no problem and there are plenty of local slopes to explore. Most runs are intermediate, though Auris is also the best of the local hamlets for beginners.

There is also night skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and a rubber ring slope.
